France in the overall patent historical context

The French patent office at the time of early aviation was the Office de Brevets, and the current one is INPI (France).

France's system of patent classification had twenty major divisions; aircraft technology falls mainly under FR 6.

France as analyzed across the aero fields and over time

France was the birthplace of ballooning, the creator of one of the first functional dirigibles, and a hotspot for aviation as it emerged in the beginning of the twentieth century. Throughout this time she was an exporter of aerial technologies across the world, supplying countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas with balloons, and later with cutting-edge aircraft engines.

Paris in the 1860s saw a wave of support for the development of heavier-than-air flight, crystallizing in the creation of the Société d'encouragement pour la locomotion aérienne au moyen d'appareils plus lourds que l'air. Remarkably it seems that the pendulum of intellectual opinion swung back to the favor of aeronautics in the 1870s following the use of balloons during the Siege of Paris. This trend influenced the creation of the Société française de navigation aérienne in 1872.

The Aéro-Club de France was founded in 1898 and quickly rose to prominence as aviation became a reality. Its authority was internationally recognized and in fact it became the core of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale when this organization was formed in 1905.

The following diagram created by Emmanuel Chadeau charts out some of the broad currents of political, industrial, and military affairs which were fueling aeronautical research in France in 1905.
