Describes an aerostat propelled by a motor; anticipates Giffard's 1852 demonstration of such a vessel.

  • Hydrogen gas
  • Elongated (cylindrical) balloon shape with tapered (conical) ends; 6 m diameter, 40 m length
  • Basket/machinery (charge) suspended below,
  • Steam engine
  • Propeller, 4 meter diameter

Giffard suggests his vessel can transport 1 or 2 people about 30 km, at a speed of 8–9 leagues per hour (= 10 m/s). (p. 9)

He goes on to provide detailed calculations showing expected force, resistance, maximum load, fuel and water requirements, etc.

  • Inventor location: Paris (29, rue du Colisée, Seine)

The designation of this invention as class 6.4 comes from INPI; it is not necessarily contemporary.
