Ernest Pétin was an aero inventor filing patents from 34, rue de la République, Paris.[1] He designed an 'aerostatic locomotive' which drew interest in Paris around 1850. He moved to the US in 1852, did a major experiment near New Orleans, and then returned to France in 1853.[2]

Historian Patrick De Oliveira has describes Pétin's design and vision as associated with utopian socialist visions of the 1848 movements.[3]

De Oliveira characterizes Pétin's best-known design thus: 4 30-meter-wide balloons would lift a giant frame with fixed wings and propellers. It was imagined to go 200 km/hour. It was incorporated into an international, globalist vision of easy travel across borders. De Oliveira cites Meunier as a thinker on this point. Petin ended destitute, in the care of his brother who forbade him from doing ballooning.[3]
