Gaston Hervieu
Gaston Hervieu (b. 1864) was an inventor who filed patents concerning parachutes and also airship hangars. He tested his parachute design with multiple drops from the Eiffel Tower. On the British filing of his parachute invention he gave his occupation as "aeronaut".
He also filed a patent for generating acetylene gas. There are more patents of his out there, including Belgian originals and probably filings in other countries as well. (According to WLZ the total was 72 in 1908.)[1]
After his father's death in 1880 Hervieu left the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers; he got involved with aeronautics in 1883.[1]
He assisted Walter Wellman with assistance in preparing for his polar expedition, including construction of a gas generator.[1]
Hervieu was involved with the Ligue Nationale Aérienne and particularly its committee on military issues, which advised the French ministry of war.[2]
