Pocock commented on the various use of his patented kites in his book, Pocock, 1827, Aeropleustic Art. He is best known-for using the kites to pull cars, in an invention called the charvolant. He also recommended that boats could use kites in place of sails at times when the wind was not blowing at the surface level. In shipwrecks he suggests using a kite to establish a rope line from the boat to a safe point on the shore, as well as for raising a distress signal. In the book he recommends using kites for other types of communication and for manned surveillance.
The kites themselves were about 12' long and, he wrote, could exert 200 lbs. of force in a high wind.
