Basic patent historical context

The Swiss patent office at the time of early aviation was the Bureau Fédéral de la Propriété Intellectuelle (Confédération Suisse).

CH is an abbreviation in this wiki referring to Switzerland. (For Confoederatio Helvetica.)

The nation is and was during the years of our primary interest trilingual, and this is reflected in various publications. We have found a "Patente-Liste", or "Liste des brevets", or "Lista dei brevetti", comiled and edited by the aforementioned "Bureau Fédéral de la Propriété Intellectuelle", or "Eidgenössische Amt für geistiges Eigentum", or "Ufficio federale della proprietà intellettuale". This all reflects official policy, with the individual patents listed monolinguistically.

Albert Einstein was a patent examiner at the Swiss patent office in Bern this period, from 1902–1909.

Challenges in finding the data

A challenge with Switzerland, approached by way of Espacenet, is the lack of IPC and CPC classification given to patents filed in Switzerland. Once we have an inventor's name on hand, generally found by way of his or her being well-known beforehand and having filed elsewhere in Europe, a name-based search will likely yield Swiss results. To fill any missing gaps, inclusive of possibly second tier Swiss inventors not having filed significantly elsewhere, an aero-terminological search, in German, and French, and ultimately in Italian as well, possibly cross-referenced with "CH" in the "Publication number" field in Espacenet's Advanced search setting, would be necessary.

Most of the scanned Swiss patents which are available from espacenet and DPMA give the date and hour of patent application. Somehow DPMA also seems to know the Veröffentlichungdaten (publication dates) of these patents (we might speculate that they inferred this information from the organization of the patents when they were scanned, or from a secondary publication).
