Max Lochner was an inventor in the Berlin area with diverse interests and capabilities including playing the violin and riding horses[1] He filed aero patents in the late 1890s from Charlottenburg, near Berlin. He filed many other patents including one for the shape of a saddle.

Paraphrasing and translating some related notes from German wikipedia:

  • he shared enthusiasm for flying with his brother Erich Lochner
  • later led by Rüdiger Haudes publication: border flights, political symbolism of aviation before the First World War (Böhlau -Verlag, 2007) "a no longer detectable novelty for the aircraft and reported this for a patent (Herz 2000: 94)".
  • according to the minutes of May 2, 1914, Max Lochner was still a member of the Free-Air Balloon Department of the German Aviation Association (DLV).
  • With the help of his knowledge of aircraft construction Max Lochner 1912 developed a streamlined car, the so-called egg or "Opel egg", which he had built at his own expense for 120,000.00 Reichsmark of Opel. It was one of the few cars with an aerodynamically shaped body at that time. The cross section was almost circular and you could stand up in the egg even at top speed of 95 km / h, as the road holding and suspension allowed this. Even with a hat, getting in and out was unobstructed and thanks to a good seal of the interior dusty this in view of the former road conditions even slightly. The red-painted and under the tax formula "13 / 30PS" patented Opel egg was confiscated during the First World War and has since disappeared.
