Cables
This techtype has to do with one or more cables, usually metallic, usually serving as a structural element, in the cases of biplanes and triplanes, for instance, and in the cases of innovations such as those of Joseph Allison Steinmetz. These latter usages often involve reeling. This techtype is to be distinguished from those associated with the "tethers" of captive balloons. Cables are often key to the manipulations involved in wing warping and the basic control of rudders. Some of Robert Esnault-Pelterie's usage of cables goes beyond the reeled or otherwise manipulated variety, to a mere inclusion within the frame. A non-manipulated cable will offer flexibility and otherwise play a role in the shaping the aircraft's body.
