Revision as of 14:20, 11 April 2019

This site has wiki pages for publications, patents, clubs, journals, letters, inventors, and other data associated with the invention of the airplane and early aviation.

Duplicate rows to fix

Per Yaron: There were duplicate rows in the "organizations" spreadsheet, possibly two organizations with the same name, so the imports overwrote the first one's information. Here are some cases:

from front page, can delete?
  • System stuff: At EMWCon 2019 it became clearer why jobs run slowly here ; there isn't much activity in the UI ; there are MORE database operations than user interface operations. this site is mainly a database. Follow instructions and links here to watch the number of jobs waiting.

Countries with most patents on this wiki

  • This does not restrict to any time period and includes some patents from technologies unrelated to aeronautics. A more complicated "having" clause could sharpen the picture. Switch "format=table" to "format=bar chart" to get a different format.

Requests to Yaron

  • (5) I'd like to rearrange the data entry fields. can put some of them sideways, e.g. the first four on one row? I don’t like to have to scroll and see so much whitespace when editing, notably a patent record. Or, if the rows need to stay the same, can we put the wiki text to one side of the long table of structured elements?
  • (6) there are no options in the "License" drop down menu when uploading an image. Can we add some?
  • (11) for Person table: first names, family names, birth date, death date, key associates (buddies and allies), education in years, key educational institutions (which may overlap with others on this wiki), professions, countries
  • (12) at the bottom of any Organizations page, I see a section called Sources. Don't want it. Is that on the form? Example: http://aero.referata.com/wiki/Aero_Club_of_Springfield
  • (13) Is there any way to get counts like the ones shown on Special:CargoTables? I want to show them on the this page?
  • (14) Service level upgrade only partly worked; paypal accepted payment for the month and records the payment as done. Paypal said it would direct the browser back to the aero site, but instead it returned to an error -- nonexistent page I think. Navigating around sitesettings again, I saw "Notice: Undefined variable: wgWikiGardenSitename in /home/yaron57/public_html/w/extensions/WikiGarden/specials/WG_ServiceLevel.php on line 165". And "service level" is not recorded as up to Premium on the wiki itself.
  • (15) details of the Letter change and the Recreate for an error message to come.
  • (17) please add to the Recreate function in Special:Cargotables two features: a note/mark in Recent changes when it starts to go, and a note when it ends.
  • (18) would like to avoid duplicates in this report: USPC 244/49 which has "or" in its specification
  • (19) http://aero.referata.com/wiki/Template_talk:Own_patent_list ; why can't i add a discussion
  • example of missing info in report: Emile-Andre Dandrieux
  • /Tech requests already addressed
  • seems like searches for amp;amp; don't find them -- one gets back: "No pages were found containing the string "amp;amp;"."
Accomplishments in March 18 research group meeting
  • determined how to cite historical patents on INPI.fr, which does not seem to have direct links to the pages with particular patents. Look for pages linking to INPI.fr for examples.
  • mass search and replaces, replacing e.g. pages with "FR category 5" to say instead simply "FR 5"
  • removal of some duplicates by hand
  • no good way to address fields mis-imported yet. Peter resists doing a new import
  • (20) /Apostrophes in query -- they seem to blow up

  • Appalachian State History and Economics conference, April 2017

  • to bring up: part of understanding a technology classification, e.g. for patents, is to know what it EXCLUDES. This takes context-specific knowledge, e.g. the later meaning of piezoelectric devices in USPC 244/75.1; the classification system develops new categories which generally the older inventions are not in.
  • future paper: might measure or challenge the idea of national innovation systems by showing the trends were the same in the different countries ; analyze patent DOCUMENTS across countries ; in terms of length, claims, how they vary as they are filed in additional countries
  • to fix large size images. switch formats. On Mac can choose size of jpg file.

Prep for data downloads

  • The cap on records in ViewData is 5000; three such queries should get all the patents
  • View some columns in each of several ViewData sessions, then copy to a spreadsheet, then save as .csv or .xlsx, import to Stata or anything for analysis
  • Big savings by importing no wiki text, nor patent titles for now
