Franz Xaver Wels
(As we proceed, an emphasis on patents first filed with Austria is likely to develop.)
Franz Xaver Wels, known sometimes simply as Franz Wels, born 10. February, in Maribor, deceased 18 October 1940 in Vienna) was an Austrian manufacturer and aviation pioneer,[1] who collaborated quite extensively with Ignaz Etrich.
This collaboration was crucial to Ignaz Etrich, and to the development of the Etrich Taube.
Wels' exposure to the aircraft of the Wright Brothers, which he saw in Paris, led to a split with Etrich over the question of whether to build a monoplane or biplane.[2]
Incidentally, Patent AT-1912-75092 seems to be a reference point for many of Wels' filings with offices other than the Austrian. This Austrian original filing was made in collaboration with Dr. Albert Eder, whom we have located in Berlin.[3]
