Duflon, Konstantinovich & Co.
Дюфлон, Константинович и Ко (Duflon, Konstantinovich & Co.) a.k.a. "Deka" was an electrical equipment firm that entered aeronautics in 1910 and produced aircraft engines for Russia during World War I.
The company was founded in Saint Petersburg in 1892 by French–Swiss electrical manufacturer Louis-Édouard-Antoine Duflon, a representative of Sotter, Harlez & Co. in Paris. He soon partnered with Apollon Vasilyevich Konstantinovich in Moscow–another affiliate of Sotter. The company won large contracts and at the end of 1895 was building a new plant in Saint Petersburg to fulfill orders from the Russian War Ministry and Russian Naval Ministry.[1]
Deka opened an aeronautics department in 1910; in 1912 it produced the airship Kobchik, designed by S. N. Nemchenko and A. E. Garuta. In 1915 it began preparing its plant in Alexandrovsk, intending to focus on aircraft engines. (It ended up buying an older facility owned by the Moznaim brothers.) The facility was built in 1916 and become one of Russia's largest and best engine makers. Its first product was the 100hp Deka M-100, designed by Boris Nikitich Vorobiev. Vorobiev and Deka went on to produce 129hp and 168hp engines.[1]
(We also have Vorobiev working for "Motor Sich" in Alexandrovsk, renamed Zaporizha in 1921; it seems that "Motor Sich" is the final renaming in a long series after this plant was nationalized in 1917.)[2][3]
