Author states in the preface that this book began as research for a thesis at Columbia, supervised by Dr. Charles C. Trowbridge in the Department of Physics. Some of the material was serialized in Scientific American Supplement (numbers 1816–1822; also published by Munn & Co.) but more has been added in the book.
Loening chooses eighteen types of monoplanes: Antoinette, Blériot XI, Blériot XI 2bis, Blériot XII, Blériot "Aero-bus", Dorner, Etrich, Grade, Hanriot, Nieuport, Pfitzner, Pischof, R.E.P. (1909), R.E.P. (1911), Santos-Dumont, Sommer, Tellier, and Valkyrie;
and twenty types of biplanes: Bréguet, Cody (1909), Cody (1911), Curtiss, Dufaux, Dunne, H. Farman (1909), H. Farman (Michelin), Maurice Farman, Goupy, Neale, Paulhan, Sommer, Voisin (1909), Voisin (Tractor), Voisin (Bordeaux), Voisin (Front Control, 1911), Wright (1909), Wright (Model R), and Wright (Model B).
Each is given several pages with some pictures and diagrams.
