General Mikhail Aleksandrovich Rykatcheff (Михаил Александрович Рыкачёв, usually referred to in print as (General) (M.) Rykatcheff, Rykatchef, or Rykatchew) was head of the Russian Meteorological and Magnetic Service, Director of the Central Physical Observatory at St. Petersburg from 1896–1913,[1] active in the International Meteorological Committee, and a founding member of the International Commission for Scientific Aeronautics.[2][3]

One of his earlier publications concerned the atmospheric results of the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883.[4]

He made scientific balloon ascents from St. Petersburg on 20 May and 1 June, 1878. He collected barometric and trigonometric data to measure elevation. He also measured temperature and humidity. These results were communicated in English in a 1900 article in the Monthly Weather Review.[5]

At the International Aeronautical Conference at Strassburg, General Rykatcheff described his laboratory for testing recording instruments.[6]

Rykatcheff was a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (Императорская Санкт-Петербургская академия Наук, renamed in 1917 as Российская академия наук, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and going through various changes thereafter).[1]

Note: Birthday 24 December 1840 in Orthodox calendar was simultaneous with 5 January 1841 in Gregorian calendar.[7]
