Санкт-Петербург, St. Petersburg, is known as a cultural capitol of Russia and hub for its intelligentsia.

Many early aero Russian publications, including Vestnik Vozdukhoplavaniya, Vozdukhoplavatel (1903-1916), and Aero i automobilnaya zhizn, were published in St. Petersburg.

Variations on the name

The abbreviation used in Brockett (and elsewhere) for St. Petersburg is Спб., transliterated as Spb.

We occasionally see the French translation, St. Pétersbourg.

In 1914 the name was changed to Петроградъ/Petrograd, then in 1924 to Ленинград/Leningrad.
