Louis Renault in 1918

Louis Renault, born on the 12th of February 1877 in Paris deceased on the 24th of October 1944 in Fresnes Prison, just south of Paris, was either the founder, or the key founder of the “Société Renault Frères”, along with his friends Thomas Evert and Julian Wyer on the 25th of February 1899[1]. His own brothers, Marcel Renault and Fernand Renault, were also industrialists, and seemingly involved in all stages of this firms's activities, though the basics could used some clarification. Things begin to look complicated upon viewing the Wikipedia articles on each of the brothers, juxtaposed with the articles on the corporate group more generally.

In terms of patents, and aviation patents not exclusively or merely featuring motors, it is Louis who is of the greatest interest to us, and when we come across the surname “Renault”, as applied to an individual, particularly in our context, this will be a reference Louis.

We have him located at 15, rue Gustav Sandoz, Billancourt, Seine, France[2], a location in keeping with the publicized location of the “Renault Frères” factories and offices[3].

It is of interest, of course, that Renault dedicated a great deal of time and energy to motors more generally, and to those of automobiles in particular, before he focused, perhaps for a brief while, on the applicability of his research to aviation. The applicability to aviation, that is, benefits from the maturity of his work more generally with motors. We are including only patents in which the inventor specifically emphasizes the particular applicability to airplane motors.
