Joseph Spiess
Joseph Spiess, born 10 September 1838, in Mulhouse, and dying 31 March 1917, was a French engineer, inventor and patenter in 1873 of the first rigid airship.[1] (It wasn't constructed and flown until 1913.[2]) He is listed as located at Paris, rue Neuve-Saint-Augustin, 5.
(Of French patriotic interest is the quotation which follows, a specific assertion that the later work of Ferdinand von Zeppelin does not constitute per se invention. (Similar variations in emphasis may be noted in the comparison of French Wikipedia on Joseph Spiess, English Wikipedia on Joseph Spiess, and German Wikipedia on Joseph Spiess.)
« Le compte Zeppelin prend ses premiers brevets relatifs à un dirigeable rigide à carcasse d'aluminium. Les principes essentiels de son rigide reproduisaient ceux brevetés en 1873 par un Français, M.S. Spiess. Si on doit admirer l'énergie et la persévérance du compte Zeppelin, dans la réalisation du dirigeable rigide, on ne peut donc l'en reconnaître comme l'inventeur. »[3] (This “M.S. Spiess”, as opposed to Joseph Spiess is a matter needing further clarification.)
“The Count Zeppelin takes his first patents relative to a rigid dirigible with an aluminum shell. The essential principles of his rigid dirigible reproduced those patented in 1873 by a Frenchman, M.S. Spiess. If one must admire the energy and the perseverance of the Count Zeppelin, in the realization of the rigid dirigible, one cannot thusly therein recognize him as the inventor.”
