Springer, 1908, Flying machines in warfare

Springer, "Chaplain at Fort Schuyler", predicts a difficulty with the use of aircraft in combat:

But, while a flying machine may be made useful in time of warfare, by remaining some distance off in a horizontal direction, taking note of the position and the side of the fortifications of the enemy, it could not be made very useful for conveying explosives and dropping them on top of the enemy, because, as soon as it began to approximate a vertical position above the enemy, it would be subjected to a deadly fire that it could not possibly resist, and would be doomed to quick annihilation. The only remedy for this, would be such an elevation for the flying machine that it would take entirely out of range the gun-fire.
