The Institut de France is a learned society established in 1795, encompassing several academies, some of which predate it. Among these, for our purposes, the most relevant is the Académie des sciences.
On French membership lists one often sees "membre de l'Institut", which we believe means a member of this organization. It may be that the person was affiliated with a specific academy, but if so this affiliation would often be unstated.
