The Hannoverscher Verein fur Luftschiffahrt (HVL) or Hanover Association for Aerial Navigation was founded on 8 May 1909. It joined the DLV (German Aeronaut Federation : Deutscher Luftschiffer-Verband), which see, 21 May 1909. The original emphasis was on ballooning, but in 1910, a department of sport flying (Abtellung fur Flugsport) was established. An Ortsgruppe or local group was founded on 25 May 1909 in Minden, Germany, and that group, which see, separately joined the DLV in December 1909.
