DLV
The Deutscher Luftschiffer Verband (DLV) or German Aeronaut Federation was founded at Augsburg, Germany, 28 Dec. 1902 for the purpose of increasing the general interest in aeronautical matters. A constitution promoting common interests in aerial navigation for both science and sport was adopted and Berlin was chosen as the permanent headquarters. The DLV superintended the training of aeronauts and published the qualifications necessary for an aeronaut as laid down by the society. It was one of the eight national organizations that met in Paris 12-14 Oct. 1905 to put together the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI). The DLV along with the Wiener Flugtechnischer Verein supported a monthly journal, Illustrierte Aëronautische Mitteilungen, whose editor in 1906 was Dr. Stolberg of Strassburg, and published a yearbook. On 19 May 1919 at Paris, which was during the first meeting of the FAI since 1913, the FAI resolved that Germany, Austria, and Hungary should be excluded from the FAI as long as they were not admitted to the League of Nations.
From 20-25 May 1902, the third meeting of the Permanent International Aeronautic Commission was held in Berlin. At that time there were discussions that there should be a a union of all German aeronaut clubs. On 28 Dec. 1902, representatives from the German Association for the Promotion of Aeronautics in Berlin and the Augsburg, Munich, and Upper Rhine Associations for Aerial Navigation came to Augsburg to form such a union. Professor Busley was elected chairman and he remained so for many years. According to one account, at the end of 1907 there were 12 affiliated clubs totalling more than 4,000 members. In 1909, some 10,235 members were reported. By April 1910, there were 49 affiliated clubs representing some 53,302 members. At the FAI Conference Statutaire in October 1910, the DLV reported the gas consumed by balloons in the country and also that there were five aeroplanes in Germany. Officers in 1910 included Professor Busley, president; General Neurenther and Professor Hugo Hergesell, vice presidents; and Dr. Stade, secretary. Count Dr. Ferdinand von Zeppelin was honorary president. There were two sections or committees expressing the interests of the association, one for free balloons and one for aerial navigation with motors.
The DLV was a founding member of the FAI on 14 Oct 1905.
"DLV" must have changed its name from Deutscher Luftschiffer Verband to Deutscher Luftfahrer Verband, sometime around 1910. Its Jahrbuch changed names in this way.
Does DLV still exist?
