Walter Wellman was an aeronaut and explorer from Ohio who tried unsuccessfully to reach the North Pole by airship in 1906 and 1909.[1] He recounted his experiences in The Aerial Age, published 1911.

His airship, America, was built in Paris by Louis-Mutin Godard. Wellman also hired Melvin Vaniman to enlarge the ship before a September 1907 (?) mission.[2]
