This patent describes a hybrid airplane/boat which can "shed" its wings and make other adjustments after landing in the water, to adapt itself better for marine travel.

Regarding the name of this technology, it "relates to hydro-aero-machines and more particularly to flying boats." The hull "is terminated abruptly slightly aft of the trailing edge of the rear-most supporting surface and may be likened to a hydro-aeroplane pontoon in this respect." Would Curtiss consider this vessel overall to be an example (or subcategory) of a hydro-aeroplane or is it somehow a distinct class?
