  • Abridgment of patent specifications 1867–76 (1903), Class 4, p. 3–9. 2223. Boyman, R. B. Aug. 1. Propelling and steering.-The invention is described in connection with ships, but is stated to be applicable for aërial navigation. It consists in the use of propellers which work in short tubes or casings projecting from the sides or stern of the vessel, the principal feature of the invention being the formation of the tubes with flared or divergent ends. The tubes, with the propellers, may be withdrawn into airtight casings in the vessel, when it is desired to use sail power. Fig. 2 shows a form of the invention in which a four-bladed screw propeller is employed. The propeller tube is shown at a. The propeller is provided with peripheral spur teeth in which gears a wheel k mounted on a carriage capable of sliding within the casing d. The wheel k is driven by a crank-pin and slotted disc from a shaft r passing through a stuffing-box in the wall of the casing. A segment of the wheel k passes through a slot in the door f. When this door is removed, the propeller can be shipped. In a modification, the propellers are placed in tubes projecting from the bottom of the vessel. In this case they are in the form of paddle- wheels in which the paddles are thrust out radially while in their active position by a cam, as described in Specifica- tion No. 1497, A.D. 1866; Specification No. 3262, A.D. 1866, is also referred to. Side exits are made in the tubes controlled by valves. By using these in various combinations, the vessel may be manoeuvred
