Albert John Fortescue was an Australian aero inventor. On a British patent he described himself as a Manufacturer. He filed patents from Loftus Street, Arncliffe, near Sydney, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia.

His obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald says he died at that same address. He was managing director of George Fortescue and Sons, Ltd., a company in Arncliffe that manufactured farm implements. George Fortescue was his father. Albert John was born in Victoria where the company had been founded. His inventions were described here, and some were mass manufactured by the family firm.

The obit says he "took a great interest in aerodynamics, and claimed to be the first man to have ever lifted a machine off the ground by means of what he termed a gyroplane." (Gyroplane usually means helicopter basically.)

Aeropedia has a substantial biography of him. It says he was working on aircraft starting about 1907, and filed a patent in 1909 in four countries.[1]   We have family tree details for him: on FamilySearch and on Ancestry.com and thetreeofus.net
