Balloons were used for bombing beginning on on 15 May 1849 during the siege of Venice , when Venice rebelled against Austrian rule. Franz von Uchatius and field marshall Radetzky are named as responsible officers.[1]
It's not clear how many bombs were dropped. They are said to have been ineffective in breaking the siege.[2]
