Patent assignment

Definitions
- A patentee can sell patent rights to another person or firm. This is called "assignment."
It is most often done at the time of the patent grant. If so, a U.S. patent will show it right on the front. If done later it may not be easy to access this information, which may be in a patent register deep in the patent office system.
Data for 1880-1920 and for aero in particular
Around 20% of U.S. patents granted in 1880 were assigned at the time they were granted. The number assigned at the grant increased gradually over time to about 30% in 1920, as shown in the chart at right.[1]
Fewer than 10% of our aero patents internationally were assigned overall in this period.[2] TO DO: check the % for US patents in particular.
