  • From google patents abstract: "Planes, arrangement of. Large aeroplanes are supported on one or more groups of superposed planes, each group consisting of two planes set forward and two planes set back, those set forward having a different chord length from those set back. Figs. 3 and 4 show two alternative groups of planes, the amount of horizontal displacement being approximately two-thirds the chord of one plane and the gap between adjacent pairs being one-half the chord or less. A number of such groups of planes may be arranged with the groups vertically above one another or spaced horizontally or both. The interplane struts are arranged as shown so that the central strut connects all the vertically superposed planes."
