"1545. McKechnie, J. Jan. 20. Aerostats.-The lower portion of the gas envelope of an aerostat is secured to a rigid framework from which the car may be suspended. By transferring the weight of the car to a light netting which envelopes the upper portion of the aerostat, or by disconnecting the lower portion from the rigid framing, descent may be effected. As applied to a balloon, Fig. 1, the car E may be supported by the framing B through ropes D, D<2> and a ring D<1>, or the weight may be transferred from the framing to the light netting F through cords F<1> by means of tackle E<x>. A longitudinal section through an air-ship is shown in Fig. 2. The envelope A is secured to the framework B to within a short distance of the top of the aerostat, the position of the envelope when partly deflated being represented by AX. The attachments connecting the envelope to the framing may be released by pulling cords from the car to enable the envelope to contract and thus reduce the lifting power."
