  • Abridgment of patent specifications 1867–76 (1903), Class 4, p. 6–7. 3087. Grylls, H. W., Neville, H., and Holt, J. Nov. 2. [Provisional protection only.] Motors.-Relates to an arrangement of coil or other springs for propelling balloons and other aerial machines &c. The motive springs are contained in a cylinder or cylinders mounted on a shaft; at each end of the cylinder is placed a metal disc with slots at the sides, the two discs of each cylinder being bolted together. Each cylinder with its discs thus forms a drum or barrel enclosing a spring. The outer end of each is fastened to a sliding bar which projects through the slots in the discs; at the end of the drum, cog-wheels or chain-wheels are fitted to convey the power to a second shaft, on which the propellers of a balloon &c. are mounted. Each spring may be wound up separately, or they may all be wound up together by means of a flywheel and gearing or ratchet-wheels. A screw or lever brake is used for checking the speed or stopping the apparatus. For reversing the motion, an intermediate shaft is thrown into gear between the main shaft and second shaft.
