  • Enclosed a translation of a letter which Mr. Whittlesey received from Mr. Owen whose patent for greasing ships while in motion by means of air I mailed you. Evidently Mr. Owen indulges in illusions and we shall have to pass him up and take out the best patent possible for your invention . . . I shall be glad to get your opinion on this subject . . . [It will take a] long struggle before success may be realized.
  • I am busy to get from General Hutchinson, of whom I have told you, ownership of his patent for the United States. He keeps the French and English patents.
  • I have received your letter of June 16 and [will reply].
