The Cobden Aero Club formed in September 1909. At its organizational meeting, members agreed that the New Zealand government should encourage the study of aviation in New Zealand. Because the club members were all working men, they decided to focus on building working models of aeroplanes. The club appears to be New Zealand's first model aircraft society.
