Australian patent classifications
The Australian patent classification system of the time of early aero is discussed here.
- The 1906 classifications, documented: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433011564964&view=1up&seq=220&q1=thematic
- The 1911 revised classifications: The Australian official journal of patents. Classifications: numerical subject list and word index, issued 23 Jan 1912. p.2 to p. 228
- These give very similar category systems; we'll check how similar.
It seems that there were several distinctive patent offices in Australia, possibly with different category systems. Here are works by the South Australia Patent Office: [1]
- AU 90 = Wind and flying machines
- AU 90.1 example
- AU 90.3:
1911 table
This table is from the 1911 one, on page 3 and subsequent pages. Each subcategory itself has several example sub-subcategories, or subject matters. Then above the Category level there are groups. So there are four levels here really. It's impressive. They have 100 classes, here, and 761 subclasss. Patents are only put in subclasses.
