The kite-balloon (ballon cerf-volant) is a long balloon shaped so it will catch the wind. It has no rigid parts except the valve.

According to Alfred Hildebrandt, the kite-balloon became, around the turn of the century, a craft of choice for militaries around the world. By 1907, the Riedinger firm in Augsburg had sold hundreds of them.[1]
