Instruments might be useful for the purpose of navigating through the air, or for external interests such as collecting meteorological data.

Many instruments at the turn of the century can be obtained as appareils enregistreurs (i.e., recording apparatuses) with interior compartments in which a needle continuously imprints the data on a scroll.[1]
