Mac Sweeny, 1844, Essay on Aerial Navigation, p. 79:

The rods of aerostats should be hollow. The hollow cane is light, but apt to snap. By boring pieces of ash and then planing them, hollow rods may be formed not liable to splinter. Legris proposed bamboo. Costa suggests that it should be bored, to render it light. In 1810, Sir. G. Caley recommended hollow bamboos, with diagonal bracings by wires, for forming a wing. He strongly recommends diagonal bracing, for giving strength, without adding much to the weight.
