André-Jacques Garnerin was a prominent balloonist and inventor.
Garnerin is often credited with inventing the parachute, the patent for which (Patent FR-1802-185) bears the name of his wife, Jeanne-Geneviève Garnerin. In this matter he was advised by the astronomer Jérôme Lalande, who apparently came up with the idea of cutting a small hole ("le trou de Lalande") in the top of the parachute and attaching a tube for a limited stream of air to escape.[1]

Il pratiqua, à son sommet, une overture circulaire assez étroite, le trou de Lalande, surmontée d'un tuyau de 1 mètre de hauteur, qui permit à l'air qui s'accumulait dans la concavité du parachute, de s'échapper. De cette manière, sans nuire aucunement à l'effet de l'appareil, on évite les oscillations dangereuses auxquelles Garnerin n'avait échappé que par miracle dans ses premières expériences."
