With thanks to Nicolas Chachreau, we have a document describing the classification that start in 1908.

Starting in 1908, the Swiss patent supercategories are identified by capital letters, A-S, with classes within them numbered from 1 to 129, with subclasses under them with a number followed by single letter suffixes, e.g. a-k depending on class. All patents are categorized in one of these subclasses, not in the numbered classes.

On a spreadsheet, Peter counts 470 total subclasses in that third level, categories into which a patent can be put. They're countable by noting the last letter. There aren't gaps except that they avoid using j. One can ignore the supercategories (identifed by capital letters) described above; it's clear that a patent is never classified directly into a supercategory, and its classification is never made clearer by knowing the supercategory which is determined by the numbered class.

This system had 19 categories in its first level, A-S, then perhaps 129 in its second level, numbered 1-129, which have the number followed by a lower case letter, then about 470 categories in its third level, which also have the number followed by a lower case letter.
