The UK military set up the School of Ballooning in 1879 under captain James Templer at Chatham. Templer trained the 24th company of the Royal Engineers.[1]
The British balloonists introduced the use of steel canisters for compressed hydrogen, and of goldbeater's skin for balloon surfaces.[1]
