Patent US-1912-1071697
From the patent text, somewhat condensed: "This invention relates to lifting propellers ... by which [an] aeroplane can be lifted in a vertical direction ... [so that] observations can be made from the aeroplane, explosives dropped on objects below, ... and the machine steadied, balanced and protected against sudden wind-pressure ... "[T]he invention consists of a lifting propeller for aeroplanes which comprises an outer ring-shaped frame, a polygonal center frame, a plurality of overlapping wings or blades which are pivoted to bearings of the ring-shaped and center [and an] upright shaft on said center-frame, means for imparting rotary motion to the shaft of the lifting propeller, and means for setting the individual wings or blades to suitable angles of inclination to the plane of the lifting propeller. The invention consists further of certain details of construction and means by which the centrally-pivoted wings or blades are tilted from their horizontal overlapping position into a position at a varying angle of inclination to the plane of the llfting propeller ..."
