"9863. Gouvernet, F. C. April 29, 1912, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Parachutes.-A parachute is normally carried in a closed box strapped to the aviator's back, and is forced out by a spring in the box when a catch holding the lid is released ; the cock of an air reservoir is simultaneously opened and the tubular ribs of the parachute are inflated, and the parachute is expanded. The pipe from the air reservoir is connected to a spherical bead, Fig. 3, formed with seven holes through which the air parses to the tubular parachute ribs. All the tubes and the head are made of rubbered canvas, and the ribs are placed between an inner and an outer covering forming the parachute envelope."
