It appears that the French patent office ONPI made a distinctive publication in 1907 focused on aero patents, presumably because it was a hot topic then. We used this work to identify relevant patents, many of which we now see in full richness from espacenet. We have difficulty citing the work precisely now, but it was at the NASM library, and it selected patents to list or include apparently based on references to them in a journal called Aerostation.

The patents it includes in its list were granted by Jan 1907, so we believe the publication was issued in 1907.

We examined this source on 29 August 2014, at the NASM library. When we get back there someday, we can clarify this bibliography entry, but we can see the information is good and do not need to anchor it further to make substantive progress using its information.

ONPI may have just made a special effort to focus on this topic and produce a distinctive one-of-a-kind publication once airplanes became a hot topic in 1907. That’s just the kind of thing a lively patent office should have done, when a field is newly relevant.

We have this information on the work:

  • "Brevet d'invention FRANCE Office National de la Propriété Industrielle 16 jan. 1904 - 22 sept. 1906 TL 513 F815 NASM Smithsonian Libraries (First published in various issues of Aérostation) Paris"

Was there a "Brevets d'invention" catalogue, aside from the greater-known BOPI?

"Brevet d'invention" (singular) is the name, or part of the name, of the catalogue.

"TL 513 F815 NASM Smithsonian Libraries" was the shelving protocol. It is conceivable that it was combined or re-bound by a US institution, e.g. NASM itself.
