The Hampshire Aero Club appears founded in October 1909 to serve Hampshire County, England. Its headquarters for meetings was The Admiral's Head, Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth. In Flight, the weekly journal of the Aero Club of the United Kingdom, the club was referred to as the Portsmouth Aero Club, perhaps because of its location, but from December 1909 on, it was consistently referred to as the Hampshire Aero Club in Flight. The club got off to a fast start. By early December, 1909, lectures on subjects connected with aeronautics had been inaugurated and presentations of papers on fuel and on internal combustion engines had interested large audiences. A site for hangars and machines was said to have been secured but it appears that a different site ended up being chosen.

At the inaugural meeting in October, 1909, Patrick Alexander was elected chairman; Roles was appointed honorary chairman, and Garnett was appointed honorary treasurer. At that time, it was revealed that the War Office had offered the use of 12 acres of ground at Fort Monkton for experimental work. However, in April 1010, it was reported that, with the permission of the War Department, the club had selected a site near Fort Grange, Gosport, and experiments in aeronautical science were to follow. Captain Marriott was secretary, 1910.

It appears that where "Flight" Manual, p. 14 (1910) and the 1913 Aviation Pocket-Book , p. 163 (Jan. 1913) refer to Portsmouth Aero Club, the name Hampshire Aero Club should have appeared instead.
