George Campbell was the eighth Duke of Argyll and is commonly referred to by his title. He was founding president of the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain in 1866.

Campbell studied birds from an early age and his correspondence at age 16 reflects a serious interest in the problem of bird flight.[1] His father, the 7th Duke of Argyll, had also studied bird flight, and corresponded with George Cayley whilst experimenting with aircraft.[2]

In 1866 George Campbell hosted the meetings leading to the formation of the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain. These began on 12 January 1866 and culminated in the first public meeting on 27 June. Campbell served as the society's first president, and brokered an early alliance with the Société d'encouragement pour la locomotion aérienne au moyen d'appareils plus lourds que l'air.[3]
