Elevons

From aero page on Alexandre Goupil: Goupil made an aircraft which "included elevators on either side of the body for pitch control. Since they would move independently, they could also be used for roll control. [These were later] known as elevons—a combination of elevator and aileron." For more see Patent FR-1883-158220.

Wikipedia does not mention this early (1883ish) history, but the term is now standard: w:Elevon

Robert Esnault-Pelterie made a craft with elevons in 1904. From Gibbs-Smith, on that page: "Esnault-Pelterie then asserted that warping was structurally dangerous. In October 1904 he tested a rebuilt version using—for the first time in history—ailerons, or rather primitive elevons, instead of the warping and front elevator . . ."
