Let's build a simple list of conflicts over early aero patents of any kind, and briefly lay out what they were about.

  • Wrights vs other manufacturers and demonstrators -- Wrights took the legal position that they were the inventors of airplanes generally, and any working airplane violated their patents somehow; U.S. courts
  • Wrights vs Curtiss especially -- long, detailed, divisive trials, e.g. documented in James Head's book
  • Creation of MAA in the U.S. -- U.S. govt pressed for U.S. aircraft makers to form a big patent pool in 1917 so war aircraft would get quickly better and fights over priority would go away
  • Fokker vs Junkers -- Fokker was not always ethical ; Junkers had a history before aero of making a living from patent licenses on his many inventions.
  • James Vernon Martin vs MAA
