The US patent office category 98, "Pneumatics", was the class used for most aeronautical patents as of 1908.
We can't tell how early this began. Patent diagrams are stamped with the "98 Pneumatics" classification. Examples go as early as 1863. But perhaps they were stamped LATER. For more, see the page US 98.
