HistPat is a database with imputed locations for 5 million US patents up to 1975 based on OCR'd records of those patents. The locations imputed by HistPat are always U.S. locations.[1]

The HistPat data as of November 2016 has been merged into the patent records on this site, and often labeled as "imputed". If there is a FIPS code of the location, that is from HistPat. Sometimes we know by having worked on the actual patent exactly what the location is. Some mismatches occur from HistPat when the true location is Northumbria, Great Britain, and HistPat's best guess was Northumbria, Massachusetts.

  1. What about Austrian patents like this one: Patent AT-1910-42844? Was the inventor location imputed by something or someone else?
