The Gordon Bennett Aviation Trophy was awarded to the winners of airplane races held from 1909–1913 and again in 1920.

From 1909 to 1913, the length of the course increased tenfold, from 20 km to 200 km.[1]

Aviators flying French airplanes won 4 out of the 5 races before World War I. Steadily improving Gnome engines were used in all four cases.[1]
