This patent describes a detachable light, made of burning magnesium (or another type of light source) with an aluminum reflector, which can be dropped from an aircraft by night to illuminate the area below, without revealing the aircraft's location or blinding its operators.

There are two versions of this patent scanned, a first version and an amended version. Both have 'first filing' and 'complete specification' and similar length; the amended version has 4 claims instead of 5 and may differ in other ways.
