Captain Robert FitzRoy (1805−) was the first director of the Meteorological Department of the Board of Trade of the United Kingdom, which post he assumed on 1 August 1854.[1]

In his career in the Navy, FitzRoy had become an expert reader of barometers. In 1831–1836 he piloted the HMS Beagle around the world with Charles Darwin on board.[2]
